No Insurance, HIGH Risk

Are you thinking about using a drone to help promote your business? Whether you are using aerial video or photography for marketing or business data you should ask your drone pilot the right questions before taking off.

There are a lot of mis-conceptions around using a drone:

Here are some great questions to ask before taking flight with an aerial service provider…

  1. Does your craft require a special flight operating certificate in hand during the flight? “There are many different requirements when dealing with a SFOC (special flight operating certificate) There are cases that allow drone pilots to fly without an SFOC but you must review the guide lines in the exemptions on Transport Canada’s website.
  2. How many flight hours have you logged? “By asking this question it gives you a great reference of skill level and flight ability. With few logged flight hours it may indicate a lot less experience using the craft in variety of weather conditions.
  3. Do you have liability insurance to cover you while you are flying your craft? If so, how much liability. “It is important to ask for proof of insurance to confirm all the details.

What does it means to fly without Insurance?

The potential implications to your business are huge if your aerial service provider does not have adequate insurance to fly their drone. Without proper insurance, if an accident were to happen and cause bodily harm to an individual or physical damage to a vehicle or other property the claim would revert back to your insurance policy. Likely your business insurance policy will not have adequate coverage for aerial flight and the cost of the claim will be paid out through the business and not the insurance provider. In some cases there may be additional penalty issued by Transport Canada depending on the severity of the penalty.

In short… Would you hire a roofer to install a new roof without insurance? I bet the answer is NO so don’t do the same with aerial marketing. Hire quality aerial professionals with flight experience and proper documentation.
